The Gamification of industrial application systems: psychological foundations, motivation mechanisms and potential for applications

Within the past 5 years, the trend of gamification has spread across most areas of information technology. Meanwhile, gamification mechanisms are applied to different fields in the business and private domain to increase motivation. There are gamification-oriented marketing tools, serious games or whole university courses that are aiming at presenting content in a playful form. Despite the advanced state of gamification in the context of various information systems and implementations, gamification has not yet reached its full potential in several areas. One possible application is the utilization of gamification within enterprise IT systems. This book illustrates why industrial application systems are particularly suited for a refinement by gamification measures. This work is not solely orientated to efficiency and revenue growth, but also focuses on human needs that are satisfied by gaming and currently ignored by certain forms of work, thereby illustrating how different adjustments within the work procedure of enterprises can help to meet human demands. These adjustments apply to all processes and procedures at all company levels, including corporate governance. The main focus of all measures that can be subsumed under the term gamification, is to increase the motivation. Furthermore the present book provides an insight into questions such as: which motivation factors can be found in video games and what are the underlying psychological mechanisms of these motivation factors. Are these factors also applicable to industrial application systems? How can a motivating game mechanics are integrated into an industrial application system?
